Diamond Comic Distributors reported that its people are working to determine the extent of damage incurred by retailers in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida affected by Hurricane Katrina. Diamond is also working to provide assistance to an estimated 50-plus hobby stores — Diamond approximates there are 32 of its customers as well as 22 Alliance Games customers in seriously affected areas.

The current state of many of these retailers is unknown, though Diamond reported two stores as “total losses” — Jaks of Biloxi, Miss.; and Hub Hobby Shop of New Orleans. Diamond Director of Customer Service and Inside Sales Eric Beck commented, “So far we’ve only managed to track down a small number of stores in the affected areas, and are working to reach the others.” Beck also requested that retailers or people who have information about retailers in the hurricane area contact Diamond as soon as possible.

Diamond, in cooperation with Alliance, will work on a case-by-case basis with the affected retailers. The goal of the effort is “to help them recover and resume operations, with potential support.” This support includes providing free goods from suppliers, extending payment terms, canceling orders, and holding shipments as necessary.

The distributor also reported UPS has suspended shipping services indefinitely to several ZIP codes in Louisiana and Mississippi.
