I’ve been a fan of Randy Reynaldo’s self-published comic book for pretty near the entire decade-and-a-half he’s been producing it in one form or another. Each new issue has a “done-in-one” story that never feels condensed, told in a manner most friendly to new readers. A short inside front cover “briefing” tells you everything you need to know about Hanes. He’s a globetrotting troubleshooter working for Justice International, a private eye, private spy, and security agency. Such an outfit might have seemed a bit outlandish when it was first introduced by Reynaldo, but our world has caught up with this series. What was once fanciful now airs a greater degree of reality to the stories. In this issue’s “Rescue in Koman,” Hanes teams with employees of a rival agency to find and free an American pilot held captive in the Middle East. Reynaldo’s storytelling inevitably puts me in mind of Milton Caniff, Roy Crane, and other adventure comic-strip creators of the past. He’s not in their league, but, like theirs, his tales are filled with exciting action, foreign intrigue, nasty villains, beautiful women, and ready humor. Reynaldo backs up his 19-page lead story with an engaging editorial and letters page, an amusing comics vignette, and “Liner Notes” on the lead story. Black-and-white interiors or not, I call that real good bang for the bucks. ROB HANES ADVENTURES is one of the few comics series I read as soon as it arrives in my mailbox. This latest issue earns an impressive four out of five Tonys. ****************************** As always, review items can be sent to me at: Tony Isabella P.O.
